RAP Transatlantic
The RAP when I acquired it was in quite a bad state. It had no valves and no back but did have some woodworm. The cabinet was stripped of it's varnish using Nitromors. I assumed the wood worm was old so I did nothing to treat it, which I would regret later. After I had filled the worm holes I finished the cabinet with french polish.
The chassis was stripped of it's rust using rust eater and wire wool, and it was then protected with Rustins Laquer.
The capacitors were all leaky and had to be replaced, by applying a little heat I was able to remove the old capacitor from the paxolin tubes and hide the replacements inside the tube. To get to all the capacitors the entire wave change switch and coils had to be removed so lots of photos were taken beforehand. There was no circuit diagram available that I could find so I drew one myself which can be downloaded from the download page. If you spot any mistakes please let me know.
The valve lineup in this set is American so I bought the valves from eBay USA. I had them delivered to a friend over there and he sent them to me to save on postage. Someone from the UK Vintage Radio forum sent me a photo of the back so I could make a replacement that was the right shape. I'll have to add a photo of that.
Once it was all finished and working I put it on the shelf to gather dust. About 2 weeks later a new woodworm hole had appeared in the front. Two holes later I removed the chassis and treated the inside to a good dose of Cuprinol. So far no new holes have appeared. If anyone out there has a suitable knob or knobs for this that the don't want then please let me know.
